How Herd and Hive was Born

Alex is a third-generation cattle farmer—raising cattle is a true joy and passion for him. He has bachelor’s degrees in both Animal Science and Ag Business from The Ohio State University. Upon graduation in 2013, Alex and Amber were married and took their place at the family farm in Adams County, Ohio. Alex and his family always butchered cattle and hogs for their own consumption, but Alex brought a different spin to this side of the farm.

Slowly, by word of mouth and the occasional Facebook post, selling freezer meat became more consistent. During the pandemic of 2020, the demand for high-quality, locally-grown meat skyrocketed. What was once a hobby quickly became a business, one that Alex and Amber both very much enjoy. They quickly expanded sales, selling to hundreds of families in over 5 different states. Alex and Amber discussed a name for this business for two years. Amber one day signed off with, “from our herd to yours” and it stuck. They finally landed on the name, “Herd and Hive.” This captures the twofold passion of both the farm and the family unit.

What never wavered through all these years was passion and priorities. Alex has been consistent in his pursuit of excellence in selecting breeds, caring for and raising cattle, and producing a product that is the highest in quality and taste. He has also made it a priority to steward biodiversity in our farm’s plant life, wildlife, and habitat. We pride ourselves in being intentional at every step: natural breeding, raising and finishing the cattle, and utilizing our own pastures and resources. The end goal? Providing you with wholesome meat that will be the cornerstone of your weeknight dinners, your holiday gatherings, and more.

Family is a very top priority for Alex and Amber and a healthy & whole family is vitally important in our world. Studies show that families function best when they are consistently sitting around the dinner table together. When families are healthy, communities are healthy. Adding flavorful nutrition to that rhythm is a joy and honor.
